According to news reports from the Vatican, he passed away this morning at his residence in the Vatican.
Today, the Bishops of Canada join Pope Francis and all the People of God in mourning the loss of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and thank God for his life of humble and dedicated service. Benedict XVI leaves behind a great legacy of teaching that will continue to inspire us, both through the three encyclicals he wrote and through the many public speeches he delivered throughout the world as Supreme Pontiff. Pope Benedict XVI, “Cardinal Ratzinger”, served as a faithful and sure guide of Catholic doctrine in his various offices with the Holy See.

Bishops of Canada Gather in Cornwall for 2022 Annual Plenary Assembly 22 September 2022 – Ottawa – Bishops from across the country will gather in Cornwall, Ontario, next week for the 2022 Plenary Assembly of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB). The gathering will bring together 72 Bishops for in-person meetings for the first time since 2019.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement of thanks following the Pope's final remarks in Canada. The Bishops of Canada are thankful for Pope Francis’ historic visit to our country. His Holiness came in fulfillment of his promise to manifest, by his very presence, his closeness to the Indigenous Peoples of this land. This visit represents a significant milestone on the path of healing and reconciliation.
